Significant Dual Extensions and Renovation in West Common
We recently took on a unique dual project in West Common, Harpenden, involving the large-scale extension and total renovation of two near-identical properties. The goal here was to significantly increase the living space while being incredibly careful to respect the original aesthetics and the character of the surrounding area. Both houses started as traditional three-bed, one-bath homes, and we’ve successfully transformed them both into spacious four-bedroom, two-bath properties with three reception rooms apiece.
Internally, we focused on refreshing what had become quite a tired layout. We carried out a full refurbishment in both homes, including brand-new kitchens and bathrooms, as well as replacing all the windows. A major part of the structural work involved removing the internal chimney breasts to reclaim valuable floor space. To make this work without losing the character of the houses, we introduced new steelwork to support the roof structure, which allowed us to keep the iconic external chimneys purely for their visual appeal.
On the outside, we were meticulous about matching the original details to ensure the extensions felt seamless. This meant sourcing specific brick types and roof tiles that blended perfectly with the existing structures, with a particular focus on the timber detailing and gable ends that define these homes. It was all about maintaining that classic West Common look while providing the modern footprint the owners needed.
To tie everything together, we gave the external spaces a complete overhaul to match the new interiors. Each property now features a new patio and landscaped garden, along with a classic gravel driveway that fits the heritage of the area. The result is a pair of homes that feel fresh and modern on the inside, while looking like they’ve always belonged in their prestigious Harpenden setting.
